PROJECTS
The Veil is an aluminum and steel sculpture located on Georgia Tech’s Campus
The VEIL
This installation began as an independent study between 10 student members in the spring semester of 2017, working closely as a team to design a constructible object that would be entered in the Art on the BeltLine competition. The student team consisted of both undergraduate and graduate students working together on the design, material research, construction methods, and test fabrication pieces. The independent study compiled a proposal presented to the Georgia Tech Student Government Association in April of 2017 to successfully acquire funds for the project, totaling in $27,000. A final team of four completed the construction documents, fabrication with aide from the Georgia Tech Research Institute, and installation of the piece on the BeltLine in December of 2017. The piece was installed on the BeltLine Eastside Trail from December 2017 through June 2018. It now stands on GA Tech campus since October of 2018.
Team Members
The team of four that carried out the project to its installation on the BeLtline were; Rebecca Churio, Bailey Rummler, Emily Wirt, and Stephanie Wright. In 2018, Emily and Stephanie continued to work on the sculpture to prepare it for its final installation on Georgia Tech’s campus. A special thanks to Jake Tompkins, the Manager of the Digital Fabrication Lab, for his tremendous efforts in helping the team through each of these processes.
Other contributors we wish to recognize are; Jessica Tolbert, Julie Kim, Scott Marble, the School of Architecture, Avni Joglekar, Devika Gokhale, Nicole Ferrer, Carmen Chee, Ghazaleh Coulter, and Daniel Baerlecken.
Concept
The Veil sits floating just above the landscape; from afar it stands as a canopy of lightness and delicacy. Yet the canopy comprised of individual steel cables serves as a tensile structure, forcing the aluminum tubes into a formation of crossing of A-frame constructions. The cables drape over the structure as a veil. The play of light and shadow interacts with the intertwining cables and allows visitors to experience the changes from walking through the piece. The Veil stands as a symbol of unity, a symbol of endurance, and a symbol of integrity. The highest point of the structure emerges from its foundations, protruding above visitors, while the stability of the cables brings it into its equilibrium, serving as a manifestation of Equity in Architecture’s commitment to equity within the field of architecture.
